GreenSoul Shoes is very pleased to announce that our very own Alastair Ong has been invited by the New York City Economic Development Corporation to be an inaugural class of the NYC Venture Fellow!  We understand that in addition to belonging to an organization where we will be able to meet distinguished companies, venture capitalists, and public figures, we will be able to receive one-on-one mentorship!

Stay tuned - we will definitely update you with our experiences with this fellowship!

AsAble.com
Website that helps start-ups!

AsAble.com is an amazing website that helps start-ups by interviewing entrepreneurs who have started a company but have not received institutional investments yet.  Alastair was honored when Justin Hong asked to interview him, and you can hear it here: http://bit.ly/AsAble_Interview.  The interview was supposed to last 20 - 25 minutes, but I think they went over 30 minutes - Alastair can never be accused of having a shortage of things to say!

We just got some photos from Cristian, a potential partner in Sao Paul, Brazil. He works as an environmental mentor for Sao Paulo’s City Hall where he trains adolescents in methods of sustainable living. Additionally, he has a partnership for tires with Interlagos, the Brazilian race track where Formula One takes place. Cristian is licensed by SUTACO – Superintendence of Craftsmanship for the Communities.

Do check out his website: http://bit.ly/dhJ5f8 and blog: http://bit.ly/cG9zsr and share your thoughts!

Cambodia is about 50% done with its 10 highway building projects which add 730 miles of pavement. In the process, they pulled up 300 land mines and 30,000 rounds of ammunition from the dirt roads!

More than 5,000 villager went to the road’s official inauguration, including “farmers who arrived by bicycle, monks with freshly shaved heads, children in school uniforms.”

Organizers stenciled messages onto large banners strung across the canopy, “Where there are bridges and roads there is hope.”

Lima runs at a slower pace than most large metropolitan cities I have been to; its rhythm is more traditional, and its people reflect a steadier, calmer constitution. It feels more like a cluster of smaller towns. The south side of the city is washed by the cold waters of the southern Pacific ocean and seems pleasantly removed from the pace of time.

Cusco, the former capital city of the Inca Empire, has a similar feel though it definitely carters to tourism far better than Lima. There are now scores of beautiful Catholic Churches and modern conveniences, such as a McDonalds smack in the middle of the Plaza de Armas (the central town square).

We really care about wasteful packaging. Check out this posting by treehugger on one of the worst packaging ideas ever:

Since we view our friends and supporters as important partners  in our new venture, we need your help in deciding which packaging we should use. Click here: http://su.pr/2MRBUk

Check back in a week when we post the results!

So our team has been visiting different fulfillment centers in the metro NYC area. Thus far we have looked at a number of centers (in fact, just one yesterday!) and have been rating each location on a number of metrics including:

  1. Do they resonate with our mission?
  2. How responsive is their customer service?
  3. Who are some of their other clients?
  4. How orderly are their facilities?

Collectively, these elements will help us determine if there is an opportunity to create a really special, long term partnership. Here is a picture we took of Iris yesterday at one of our site visits. =)

winnieSo we have the pleasure of working with Winnie Ho, formerly from Citigroup. Winnie heard about us from Lisa Tai, one of Stephen’s friends from his work at another nonprofit, and decided to send us an email.

We asked her what she was interested in working on and her answer?

Designing shoes and running contests!

Within two weeks, Winnie designed and launched a shoe contest to source the best shoe designs using techniques of crowdsourcing and launched the first of many contests to make sure our consumers have as much say as they can in the design of our eco-beneficial footwear.

So we have been busy working on our business plan for The Green Business Competition to promote emerging green businesses in New York.

The competition will reward investment funds to companies that “have the ability to revolutionize their industry by working with our ecological resources while creating economic opportunities.”

Sounds like us! In other news, we have been taking resumes for 10 week internships, anyone interested? We  have had about half-a dozen requests so far!

We spent the weekend at Brown at the “Sustaining Social Entrepreneurship” conference hosted by noted academic  Shirley Brice Heath.  She is a Professor of English and Dramatic Literature and a linguistic anthropologist whose primary interests are innovation in learning, business, health, race relations and organizational learning.

Our team was asked to talk about our experiences on the complexities of social entrepreneurship.social-capital

We spoke about the value of social capital and its link to underlying economic prosperity. More to come!
